ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) Reconstruction

A Major Surgery - Simplified

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL reconstruction) is a surgical tissue graft replacement of the anterior cruciate ligament, located in the knee, to restore its function after an injury.

This problem is a common occurrence among many individuals, especially those who lead an active lifestyle or engage in sports. It can cause daily challenges in their everyday lives, but fortunately, it can be treated with remarkable accuracy. The core surgery can be completed in just one day, and the post-operative stay in India usually lasts around 10 days, until a fit-to-fly certificate is obtained. The cost of this surgery is highly affordable, and the rate of recovery is outstanding.

Rehabilitation after Surgery

As soon as you wake up in the recovery room, your knee rehabilitation program kicks off to restore your range of motion. In the first week following surgery, it is recommended for most patients to independently lift their legs while lying on their backs, known as straight leg raises. By the end of the second or third week, patients typically progress to walking without the need for crutches.

Physical therapy sessions usually begin within seven to 14 days after the surgery. If you did not undergo a meniscus repair, weight-bearing exercises are allowed during these sessions.

Aiming for a range of motion of 0 to 140 degrees is a reasonable target for the initial two months.

Avoid putting excessive strain on your quadriceps early on, as this may stretch the ACL graft. Instead, consider incorporating stationary bike riding or performing lightweight leg presses during the first three months after surgery. These exercises help strengthen the quadriceps while ensuring the hamstrings protect the ACL graft.

For a period of five months, it is advisable to refrain from swimming or running. However, around two to three months post-surgery, you can engage in swimming exercises using only your arms, without using your feet.

Although the statement above is a generalization, it is crucial to understand that your doctor will tailor a precise plan based on your individual medical needs. In Bangladesh, there are numerous rehabilitation facilities that can greatly contribute to your successful recovery. If you require any post-surgery consultation from Bangladesh, Shohoj Medical Service can facilitate an online or email connection with a doctor who can provide you with the necessary guidance for any issues that may arise.
